Tree Care After You Get Home

Refresh the tree by making a straight cut, taking about 1/2 inch off the butt and immediately place tree in water. This will improve water uptake. Even if you do not bring the tree inside for a few days, keep it in water outside or in a garage. Note- if your tree is drilled for a pin stand, do not cut more than 1/4 inch off the butt. A deeper cut may cause the drilled hole to be too short for your pin stand.

Place the tree in a stand that can hold at least 1 gallon of water. You should expect the tree to take up additional water. Trees usually take up a lot of water for the first few days. Water the new tree until water uptake stops.

Check water level daily. Always keep the base of a tree in water. If the base dries out, resin will form over the cut end and the tree will not be able to absorb water and will dry out quickly. You don't need anything other than regular tap water. Commercial mixes, aspirin, sugar or other additives introduced into the water are not necessary. Research has shown that plain water keeps a tree fresh.

Your tree will remain fresh and green and hold it's needles for at least 3-4 weeks (or longer) if kept watered and not allowed to dry out.
